College Admissions Tests (SAT/ACT/Subject)

What Are College Admissions Tests?

While most colleges are no longer requiring admissions tests, some may still require them.  There are two tests that colleges will accept; the SAT and the ACT.  Students can take one OR both of the admissions tests.  Colleges do NOT require that students take both.  Colleges do not have a preference as to which test a student takes.  Colleges will look at the HIGHEST score when they review college applications.

IF I plan to take the SAT or ACT, when do I take them?

SAT and ACT:            Take the SAT and ACT at the end of your Junior Year and again at the
start of Senior Year. For your senior year, you may want to focus on the
admissions test on which you scored the highest.

PSAT:                           ALL juniors should take the PSAT.  Freshmen and Sophomores are also
welcome to register for the PSAT.  The PSAT is given once per year at RHS in
                                                   October.

When and How to Send Official Test Scores to Colleges

  • You should send your scores to ALL colleges you are interested in applying to WHEN YOU REGISTER FOR THE SAT OR ACT!
  • Colleges need official SAT and ACT scores sent to them directly from the College Board and ACT Student.
  • Admissions officials recommend that students report scores from all SAT and ACT tests (even if they didn't do so well on one of them) - many colleges combine portions of each test to create a "super-score" to see how students did at their best!
  • At the time of registration, you get to choose four colleges to receive scores "for free" - why pay more to send scores later?

Tricks and Tips about Sending SAT Scores

  • For students interested in CSU schools - you only need to send your scores to any one CSU campus because they share them with all the other CSU campuses automatically (so, use the other three free reports for other schools!)
  • For students interested in UC schools - you only need to send your scores to any one UC campus because they share them with all the other UC campuses automatically (so, use the other three free reports for other schools!)

Tricks and Tips about Sending ACT Scores

  • CSU schools share ACT scores among themselves just like they do with SAT scores!  So send your ACT scores to ONE CSU campus.
  • UC schools share ACT scores among themselves just like they do with SAT scores!  So send your ACT scores to ONE UC campus.
